Édouard Manet made his name with provocative scenes of Parisian life, but his summer retreats to seaside resorts offered an opportunity to paint en plein air and to explore one of his earliest interests—the ephemeral conditions of the sea, sky, and coast. In the hopes of joining the navy as a young man, Manet made a transatlantic voyage from Le Havre to Rio de Janeiro in 1848. It allowed for an in-depth contemplation—if not recording—of the elements, as he later described to a fellow painter: "I spent countless nights watching the play of light and shadow in the ship's wake. During the day, I stood on the upper deck gazing at the horizon. That's how I learned to construct a sky."In 1873, Manet and his family visited Berck-sur-Mer, a quiet fishing village on the Channel coast well known for its restorative hydrotherapies. Without a port in which to shelter their boats, the fishermen of Berck beached their flat-bottomed vessels on the nine-mile stretch of coast that extended to Le Touquet. The shank and crown of a large anchor in the lower left foreground draw the eye toward the center of the canvas, where a fishing boat with a mast lists to the left, its bowsprit and riggings pointing toward the high horizon. Two men apply flaming tar to the side of the boat to make the overlapping planks of its hull watertight. Spewing a greasy black smoke carried by the sea breeze, the fiery blaze glows in pinks, reds, and yellows, a stark contrast to the gleaming black of the hull and the grays, beiges, and yellows of the sand. With a few white horizontal streaks, Manet suggests the chop of the waves and the clouds in the sky. Judith Dolkart, The Barnes Foundation: Masterworks (New York: Skira Rizzoli, 2012), 132.
