The statue of the "Farnese Hercules" and some ancient ruins surround a paved path that evokes the Via Appia. At the foot of the remains, a man raises a tombstone and discovers the entrance to a cave that watching two women dressed in antique. The composition leaves room to cloudy sky on which a large tree silhouette cut-out.

In 1790, Pierre-Antoine playwright Caron de Beaumarchais control decor consists of eight panels Hubert Robert to the large living room of his mansion in Paris. In 1802, the Urban Works condemn the mansion. The house was bought by the City of Paris in 1818 and its destruction was completed between 1826 and 1829.
