Ignaz Raffalt (1800-1857) was in his time a valued genre and landscape painter - now, however, the name is almost forgotten. Raffalt spent his childhood and youth in Murau in Upper Styria, was originally supposed to take over the inn of the Father and first completed a business education. Very soon, however, he discovered his passion for the art and taught himself to paint with itself. In 1820 he emigrated to Vienna, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts until 1825 history painting with Anton Petter and Johann Peter Krafft. He also attended the landscape class with Josef Mössmer. Soon he returned to the Steiermark back and eventually took over in 1833 his father's company in Murau. Ignaz Raffalt initially painted portraits, still lifes and genre scenes look at life on the land; one of his clients was Archduke Johann (1782 to 1859). 1837 held in Graz Raffalt a successful exhibition in 1839 his paintings were represented for the first time in the Academy exhibition in Vienna. The following year he moved to Vienna and devoted himself henceforth mainly by painting landscapes in which the human being in his daily doings, whether as a driver, hikers or farmers, plays only a minor role. Thunderstorms and rain moods as the evening twilight are predominant. 1848 Raffalt member of the Academy, after 1851 he exhibited in the Austrian Art Association. Raffalt son John Gualbert (1836-1865), who was also a landscape painter, gained mainly by its atmospheric views from the Puszta celebrity. [Sabine Grabner 8/2009]
